'' When defending yourself, first use your mind; secondly, be able to use a long range weapon effectively; thirdly, be able

to use a bladed weapon; and lastly, be skilled in using a striking art. The least of your worries in saving yourself

and your family is what you should do while wrestling with one bandit on the ground. ''

'' Seek a shadow partner that is willing to give you quality training time without the ugliness of the ego.

The quality of your skills will depend heavily on the skill and diligence of your shadow partner. ''

'' Although you have a kind heart and you are fair to people, you must develop intensity and ferocity -

- survival situation will require them. ''

'' Periodic times of frustration during training are to be expected. Frustration comes from the inability to meet inner and outer

expectations. You need to return to the basics and simplify your practice. Learn to slow down your desire

and refine what you have already achieved. ''

'' Having the freedom to make choices means you have to actively create your future. Inactivity will lead to feelings and acts

of misery and insecurity that will cause you to make poor decisions in life. Feel the happiness in practicing a martial art.

Your art will carry you through life's ups and downs. ''

'' Knowledge itself can be known without the actual experience. However, a wise martial artist must have enough experience to understand

the knowledge. It is very important not to poison beginning students with with too much knowledge when the lack experience. ''

'' Offense is based on attack, deffense is based on body structure. ''

'' The human being may be considered an information processing system, symilar to the way a computer operates.

For the martial artist, the inputs consists of various attacks from an opponent. The processing involves noting the important

characteristics of the attack and selecting the proper response. Finally, the output of the martial artist consists in the execution

of a response. The greater the number of responses available, the more difficult it becomes to select one.

Having selected an apropiate response, the practitioner must physically execute it. Muscle groups must be trained individually

to provide the correct leverage. Then, to correctly execute the response, muscle groups must be train to act as one unit. ''

'' Wing Chun follows the human instinct to stand and walk. Other so called battlefield arts also tend to lack grappling

to the skill level that people demonstrate today as it is easier for one of your opponents to stab you in the back.

The style has the arsenal to to deal with grapplers, but it is the individual who must apply it. ''

'' Instead of hundreds of different techniques for hundreds of different situations, you need a few simple and flexible ideas

or principles that you can use and adapt. ''

'' On the pavement arena there are no referees, time limits, weight divisions, rules or time to study and prepare for the fight.

There is no room for ego, style, lineage, favorite techniques, marketing, history lessons, belts or certificates.

The only trophy is that you get to live another day. ''

'' Many systems say they don't chase hands, yet the very technique they create a technique based environment - where things

are supposed to happen in a predetermined way - they are, in every sense of the word, chasing hands - in the entire system's

general approach. The hunt for false environments; the need to create a feel good moment by trying to crystalize

an organic and ever-changing situation into frozen moments in time. ''

'' The fact is : you are going to get hurt. Win or loose, fighting is a dirty business. But the business of selling and profiting

vastly from pretend fighting is far worse! ''

'' Wing Chun is just a training system based around a few logical ideas and concepts. It is a system that tries to cultivate

and to develop habits supported by natural human body mechanics that just might increase your chance of survival

in a violent altercation. By having realistic expectations of what the training methods can help you achieve,

you can approach the strength and weaknesses of the system with open eyes. You, as an individual, can make

educated decisions and avoid the pitfalls of marketing propaganda and outrageous claims. ''

'' The concept of chasing hands goes beyond just following the limbs. If you are prone to a particular stance or structure,

then you are chasing hands. If you need a certain range, you are chasing hands. If you need to make a bridge,

you are chasing hands. Any predetermined step - be it physical, mental or emotional - that you need

before you react is chasing the hand, and as such, inherently flawed. ''

'' If it's going to be physical, it's all about learning to hit hard and to hit first.

This is the only thing that works consistently.''

'' You can't play with martial arts - you do them or you don't. If you do them recreationally, you'll only get

the recreational results. If you really want to find yourself, you need to dwelve into the arts

and it needs to become a life passion. ''

'' If you want to know yourself and others, you must give up yourself and follow others.

If you give up yourself and follow others, first you must have the correct timing and position.

To obtain the correct timing and position, you must first make your body one unit. Desiring to make

the body one unit, you must first eliminate hollows and protuberances. To make the whole body

without breaks or holes, you must first have the spirit and the energy excited and expanded.

For this, you must raise and focuse the spirit and make the energy and the spirit penetrate your bones.

Desiring the spirit and the energy penetrate the bones, first you must strenghten the thighs,

loosen the shoulders and let the energy sink down. ''

'' Practising the forms everyday is the kung fu of knowing yourself. Chi Sao and sparring

is the kung fu of knowing others.''

'' Distinguish clearly between substantial and insubstantial. To Fa Jing is necessary to have root.

The power starts from the foot, is commanded by the waist, manifested in the fingers

and discharged through the spine and back.''

'' The source of the postures lies in the waist. If you cannot get power, seek the defect in the legs and waist.''

'' Don't let one ounce of force remain in the blood vessels, bones and ligaments to tie yourself up.

Then you can be agile anf able to change. You will be able to turn freely and easily. ''

'' To enter the door and be shown the way, you must be orally taught.

Practice should be uninterrupted and technique achieved by self study. ''

'' If the opponent raises up, I seem taller; if he sinks down, I seem lower;

Advancing, he finds the distance incredibly long; retreating, the distance is exasperatingly short.

If he doesn't move, I don't move; at his slightest move, I move first.

A feather cannot be placed and a fly cannot alight on any part of the body. ''

'' To Fa Jing, sink, relax completely and aim in one direction.

In the curve seek the straight, store, then release.

Walk like a cat: when moving, there is not one place that does not move.

When still, there is no place that is not still. ''

'' Fear is the most overlooked aspect of any attack scenario. The creation of fear in the victim

is one of the major goals and weapons employed by a would-be attacker. As such, any self-defence system

that ignores or plays down this aspect cannot be regarded as realistic. ''

'' Agression can be a useful tool when channelled correctly. But anger is a sign of lack of mental control

and can blind you to what is going on around you, affecting your own intuitive responses. ''

'' At the core of any good self-defence system are only a few techniques - honed and developed

using the concepts of simplicity, directness and efficiency - and applied with the intention

of being first, being fast and being ferocious.

SIMPLE: does not require analysis or thought procession; is as automatic as blinking;

utilises the minimum number of movements.

DIRECT: follows the shortest distance from two points; attacks the closest target with the nearest weapon.

EFFICIENT: does not create targets for the attacker; has minimal effect on stability/balance.
